Sjosanden is Mandal's classic beach: a broad strip of pale sand just west of the centre, backed by pines and low dunes. It is famous by Norwegian standards, which means it can be busy on warm summer days but still feels relaxed compared with beach resorts further south in Europe.
The beach sits inside the Furulunden recreation area, so it is easy to turn a swim into a longer walk through forest paths and smaller coves. Even when the water is too cold, the setting makes a good coastal stroll.
