Mandal is Norway's southernmost town, a small place of white timber houses, a salmon river, and sandy beaches tucked into the Skagerrak coast. It is less urban than Kristiansand and less museum-like than some old harbour towns, which is part of why it works.
The town's identity is outdoorsy but gentle. Sjosanden is one of Norway's best-known beaches, backed by the pines of Furulunden. Risobank adds a curious Edwardian summer-house note, while the old centre and the Uranienborg viewpoint make Mandal easy to enjoy on foot.
Come in summer if you want swimming and long evenings. Outside the warm months, Mandal is quieter but still good for a coastal walk and a look at the white-painted southern Norwegian townscape.
