Deichman Library Bjørvika

The Deichman main library at Bjørvika, which opened in 2020, is one of the most ambitious public library buildings in the world — a six-storey timber and glass building designed by Lund Hagem and Atelier Oslo, set between the Opera House and the Munch Museum on the waterfront. It is completely free to enter, open to everyone, and manages the considerable feat of being both architecturally spectacular and a genuinely pleasant place to spend time.

The library holds 450,000 items across six floors, with reading rooms, a children's library, a recording studio, a photo lab, and a performance space — all free to use. The top floor has panoramic views of the Oslofjord. Cafe on the ground floor. Open seven days a week. In a city known for expensive public amenities, it is the one that costs nothing and delivers the most.
