Eating Out

Oslo has quietly become one of Europe's more interesting food cities — helped by serious investment in Nordic cuisine and a local food culture that takes fresh, seasonal, and often foraged ingredients seriously. It is also very expensive. A mid-range restaurant dinner for two with wine will cost 1,200–1,800 NOK.

The Mathallen food hall in Vulkan is the most practical choice for affordable quality across many cuisines — smoked salmon, pastries, street food, and more. For Norwegian cooking, look for restaurants featuring kjøttkaker (meatballs in gravy), fårikål (lamb and cabbage stew), rakfisk (fermented fish), and the smoked salmon and brown cheese that are national staples. At the very top of the food chain, Maaemo has three Michelin stars and a menu built entirely around Norwegian ingredients.

The cheapest lunch in Oslo is at a bakery or a supermarket deli — Norwegians eat open sandwiches (smørbrød) for lunch and most workplaces don't go out. This is worth knowing if your budget is limited.
