Mathallen is Oslo's main food market, housed in a converted industrial building in the Vulkan district beside the Akerselva river. It has around 30 stalls and small restaurants covering Norwegian food traditions alongside international cuisines — smoked salmon, brown cheese, charcuterie, craft beer, specialty coffee, tacos, ramen, and local bakeries. The quality is generally high and prices are competitive with Oslo restaurants, which is to say moderately expensive by European standards.
The surrounding Vulkan and Grünerløkka neighbourhoods are Oslo's main alternative culture and food districts — independent cafes, vintage shops, music venues, and a Sunday flea market at Birkelunden park. The SALT arts space by the river has outdoor concerts and a floating sauna in summer. Mathallen is open Tuesday to Sunday.
