Torshov

Torshov is a quiet north Oslo neighbourhood with a clear 1920s plan: broad courtyards, green spaces, and solid blocks of housing influenced by the garden city movement. It sits uphill from Grünerløkka, so it feels more residential than fashionable, but the scale and the leafy streets make it rewarding for a slow walk.

The small landmark to look for is the Torshov bull in Hegermanns plass, an octagonal square at the heart of the district. Come here if you want to see a less polished slice of Oslo's east side, where everyday apartment blocks still carry a bit of civic ambition.
