Things to Do

Longyearbyen's appeal falls into two distinct seasons: the frozen, dark winter that rewards snowmobile safaris, dog sledding, and Northern Lights watching; and the luminous summer of midnight sun, boat expeditions, and hiking. In between — the blue-twilight transition months of March and October — the light is extraordinary and the crowds are thin.

The museums are excellent for a town of this size. The polar bear warning is real: outside town limits you are legally required to carry a rifle, and many visitors hire a guide precisely because of this. The seed vault and the Mine 3 tourist mine are the two visits that speak most specifically to why this particular place exists.
