Norwegian Canning Museum

World's only sardine cannery museum in a 1916 factory

Address Øvre Strandgate 88, 4005 Stavanger

The only canning museum in the world, housed in a genuine 1916 sardine cannery in the old harbour district. Stavanger's sardine industry was the engine of the city's economy for most of the 20th century, and this museum does justice to the story — from the women who hand-packed the tins to the global export trade that put Norwegian sardines on tables from Paris to New York.

A story
On the first Sunday of each month, the museum fires up the old sardine-smoking ovens and hands out smoked brisling to visitors — the same snack that made Stavanger famous and fed Allied soldiers through two world wars.
