Gamle Stavanger (Old Town)

170 whitewashed timber houses, one of northern Europe's best-preserved old towns

The old town is one of the best-preserved wooden townscapes in northern Europe, with around 170 whitewashed timber houses from the late 18th and early 19th centuries climbing the hillside west of the harbour. The cobbled lanes are quiet and residential — people actually live here — which gives the area an authenticity that most preserved historic districts lack. Wander up from the harbour in the early evening when the light catches the white facades.
