Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

This impressive baroque church near the market square was built in the early eighteenth century as a Lutheran church by Silesian Protestants, who were permitted to build outside the town walls under the terms of the Peace of Westphalia. The interior is remarkable: three levels of wooden galleries packed tight around the nave, capable of holding thousands of worshippers, with elaborate painted ceilings and an ornate organ.

The church is now Roman Catholic but remains a good example of the distinctive Silesian peace churches built at a time when Lutherans in this region were strictly limited in where they could worship. The exterior is relatively plain; the interior rewards a visit.
