Karkonosze National Park

Karkonosze National Park covers the highest section of the Sudete range, with the summit of Śnieżka at 1603 metres the highest point in the range. The park is shared with the Czech Republic, where it is called Krkonošský národní park. A cable car from Karpacz reaches close to the summit of Śnieżka; from the top on a clear day you can see across three countries.

The park has an excellent trail network. Popular routes include the ridge walk along the main Karkonosze plateau, the trail to the Śnieżne Kotły glacial cirques (one of the park's most dramatic landscapes), and the paths through the rock formations and peat bogs of the lower slopes. Jelenia Góra is the natural base; Szklarska Poręba to the west and Karpacz to the south are the main resort towns within the park.

A story
The Karkonosze mountains form a natural border with the Czech Republic and have been a protected area since 1959. The name means 'Giant Mountains' in Polish (Krkonoše in Czech) — a name earned partly by the region's weather, which can turn ferocious even in summer. The plateau at the top of the range, known as the Biegun, is one of the windiest places in Central Europe.
