Katowice Market Square

Pedestrianised city square with Silesian Art Deco architecture

The Rynek is the pedestrianised heart of the city, a broad square surrounded by a mix of 19th-century tenement houses and interwar modernist buildings. It lacks the grandeur of Kraków's market square, but it has real character — coffee shops spill onto the pavement, and the buildings around it include some good examples of Silesian Art Deco. The square is also the site of regular markets and outdoor events in summer. Walk east along ul. Mariacka, the city's main café and bar street, which is pleasant day and night.
