The Silesian Theatre — Teatr Śląski, dedicated to Stanisław Wyspiański — is the largest theatre in Silesia and one of the most important cultural institutions in southern Poland. Founded in 1907, it occupies a handsome building just south of the market square and runs a full repertoire of drama, opera, and dance. Productions tend to be bold and the building itself is worth a look even if your Polish is not up to an evening's performance.
The theatre has been at the centre of Silesian cultural life through some difficult periods — it operated under both German and Polish administration, adapting to each political era without losing its identity. A programme of contemporary Polish and international drama alternates with the classics. Check the website for English-language subtitling on selected performances.
