Plac Litewski (Lithuanian Square) is the large formal square to the west of the old town where Lublin's most important historical event took place: the signing of the Lublin Union in 1569, which united the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania into a single state. A monument stands at the centre of the square marking this. The square itself is attractive in the formal Central European manner — neoclassical buildings, a fountain, trees.
In the summer the square hosts open-air events and serves as the social hub of the city centre. It is a natural stopping point between the old town and the newer parts of the city. The nearby Hotel Lublinianka (now the IBB Grand Hotel) is a handsome early 20th-century building worth looking at from the outside.
