Old Jewish Cemetery

Lublin's old Jewish cemetery on Kalinowszczyzna Street is one of the oldest Jewish burial grounds in Poland, with graves dating from the 16th century. It survived the Nazi occupation in poor condition — many stones were used as paving — but was later restored and remains an active pilgrimage site.

The cemetery contains the tombs of several influential rabbinical figures whose writings shaped Jewish law and mysticism. The graves are dense and weathered, with Hebrew inscriptions and the carved symbols of different religious families. Access is through a gate; the keeper is usually present during daylight hours.

A story
The cemetery's most visited grave is that of the Maharal's student, Rabbi Shmelke of Nikolsburg — but the site is associated above all with the "Seer of Lublin," Yaakov Yitzchak Horowitz, an 18th-century Hasidic master whose ohel (tomb structure) draws pilgrims from around the world, particularly on his yahrzeit. The Seer reportedly had the gift of seeing a person's soul, and advised Napoleon Bonaparte on his campaigns — advice the Emperor did not follow, to his eventual cost.
