St. James' Cathedral

Massive Gothic basilica, the largest church in northwestern Poland

The Cathedral Basilica of St. James the Apostle is the largest church in northwestern Poland and the most impressive building in Szczecin. A Gothic brick basilica begun in the 14th century, it dominates the skyline from across the Oder and defines the character of the old city hill.

The interior is vast and austere in the manner of northern European Gothic, with high brick vaulting, large windows, and relatively sparse decoration. The treasury holds carved altarpieces and Gothic sculpture. Climb the tower for the best elevated view of the city and the surrounding Oder delta. The cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Szczecin-Kamień and still an active place of worship.

A story
The cathedral's twin towers were finished only in the 1990s — the original medieval design had always called for them but construction stalled and the building stood incomplete for over five centuries. The towers were finally built with donations from German Pomeranians living in exile, a significant act of reconciliation given that the same population had been expelled from the city in 1945.
