City Museum (Royal Palace)

Address Kazimierza Wielkiego 35, 50-077 Wrocław

The City Museum of Wrocław is split across several buildings; the main historical exhibition is in the former Royal Palace, a Baroque-classical building built for the Prussian kings in the 18th century. The displays move chronologically from medieval Wrocław through the Habsburg and Prussian centuries to the German Breslau of the 1930s and the difficult Polish reconstruction after 1945.

The room dedicated to the city's near-total destruction in the 1945 siege of "Festung Breslau" — the last major Wehrmacht stronghold to fall in Europe — is genuinely sobering. Plan around an hour and a half.
