The Church of Santa Maria do Castelo stands inside Tavira's castle area. It was built after the Reconquista and later rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, leaving only parts of the earlier Gothic church, including the portico and twin window.
It is best visited together with the castle and nearby old-town lanes, where Tavira's layered Moorish, medieval, and post-earthquake history is easiest to see.
