Igreja da Misericórdia

The Igreja da Misericórdia, a few steps from the main square, dates from the sixteenth century and contains what is considered the finest Renaissance doorway in the Algarve. The carved stone portal features elaborate Flemish-influenced ornament that reflects Tavira's mercantile connections during the Age of Discovery. The interior has an azulejo (blue tile) panel depicting works of mercy that is among the better examples of eighteenth-century tilework in the region.

The church functions as an art gallery and museum in addition to occasional religious services. Entry is modest. The building is often overlooked in favour of Santa Maria do Castelo but deserves equal attention.

A story
The Misericórdia portal, carved between 1541 and 1551, is considered the finest Renaissance doorway in the Algarve. The sculptor is unknown, but the work shows clear Flemish influence — Tavira in the sixteenth century was a significant trading port with direct connections to Antwerp, and Flemish merchants and craftsmen were resident in the town. The portal's combination of classical columns, elaborate canopy, and figurative sculpture is unique in southern Portugal.
