Gilão River Walk

The walk along the Gilão river through Tavira's center is the town's most pleasant promenade. From the old Roman bridge, a riverside path runs south along both banks toward the Quatro Águas dock, passing under bougainvillea-draped walls, small cafés with tables on the waterfront, and the occasional fishing boat tied up at the quay. The walk takes about twenty minutes at a gentle pace and is best in the morning or late afternoon.

Several good cafés are positioned along the southern stretch of the river, particularly on the east bank. The combination of water, boats, whitewashed walls, and the distinctive pyramid rooflines visible above the old town is quintessential Tavira.

A story
The Gilão was once a tuna fishing river — large bluefin tuna were netted in its lower reaches during seasonal migrations along the Algarve coast. The tuna fishing industry that supported Tavira for centuries collapsed in the mid-twentieth century as Atlantic bluefin populations crashed from industrial fishing. The canneries that processed the catch have all closed; the only trace is in the names of some of the streets near the waterfront.
