Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção

Sixteenth-century parish church, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake

The parish church of Cascais, just behind the old fishermen's quarter, was originally built in the sixteenth century. Heavily damaged by the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755 and rebuilt in the years that followed, it retains a mixed character: a Mannerist stone facade with a baroque interior.

The interior is decorated with seventeenth-century azulejo panels by António de Oliveira Bernardes, one of the most important Portuguese tile-painters of the period, and several gilded baroque altarpieces. The four paintings of the Life of the Virgin attributed to Josefa de Óbidos — Portugal's most celebrated Baroque female painter — are the prized possession.
