Bairro Alto is a neighbourhood with a split personality. By day it's quiet and residential, with shuttered windows and laundry lines overhead, the kind of place where you can browse vintage shops and small galleries without bumping into crowds. After dark it transforms into Lisbon's principal nightlife district, with dozens of tiny bars crammed into a grid of narrow streets, their patrons spilling onto the pavement with beers in hand. Several miradouros offer spectacular sunset views over the city and the Tagus, with Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara being the standout. Traditional fado bars still operate here alongside cocktail joints and dive bars. The Elevador da Gloria funicular connects Bairro Alto to the Baixa below.
