Ermida da Memória

The Ermida da Memória is a tiny chapel on the edge of the Sítio promontory, a few steps from the clifftop sanctuary. Built in the 12th century — or at least on 12th-century foundations — to commemorate the miracle that supposedly occurred on this spot, it is one of the oldest religious buildings in the Nazaré area. The interior is simple: a small nave, a few devotional images, and a cave alcove that marks the site of the supposed apparition.

The chapel's age and simplicity make it more moving than the large sanctuary nearby. Stand at the railing next to it and look down: the cliff drops 100 metres to the beach below, which sharpens your appreciation of the story of Dom Fuas Roupinho's horse stopping at the edge.
