Óbidos works best as a day trip from Lisbon, but if you're staying overnight there are several decent outings within half an hour. The dramatic Lagoa de Óbidos, a coastal lagoon at Foz do Arelho, has long white-sand beaches and excellent shellfish restaurants. Peniche, a working fishing port on the rocky cape further south, is the jumping-off point for the Berlengas Islands — a remote nature reserve a 30-minute boat ride offshore.
Caldas da Rainha, 6 km north, has a daily fruit and vegetable market in Praça da República, the José Malhoa Museum of Portuguese naturalist painting, and a strong ceramics tradition.
