Cathedral of the Ascension

The Cathedral of the Ascension of Jesus and the Three Holy Hierarchs is the principal Orthodox church of the Archdiocese of Buzău and Vrancea, consecrated in November 2009 by Patriarch Daniel in front of some 10,000 believers. The consecration coincided with the elevation of the diocese to an archdiocese — the building and the institution were promoted on the same day. It is a large, cross-plan church with interior frescoes painted in the traditional Byzantine technique by the local priest-painter Petre Brașoveanu and his students.

The cathedral is substantial without being spectacular — newer than most Romanian Orthodox churches travellers tend to seek out. If you are in the centre and happen to pass it, the interior frescoes are worth a look. For a more historically interesting religious building, the 16th-century Episcopal Cathedral (restored in 1740) on Episcopiei Street is a quieter and older alternative a short walk away.
