Buzău has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the best times to visit: temperatures are comfortable, the Crâng park is at its most appealing, and the roads to the mud volcanoes are in good condition.
Summer (July–August) can be very hot, with temperatures regularly above 35°C. The mud volcanoes remain accessible in dry summer weather but the exposed grey plateau can be punishing in the midday sun — go early or late in the day. Winter brings cold and occasional snow; the volcanoes are less active in extreme cold and the roads to the reserve can become slippery.
The one condition that closes the mud volcanoes regardless of season is heavy rain. The clay paths become impassable and the reserve management suspends visits. Check conditions locally before setting out from Buzău.
The Dealu Mare wine harvest takes place in September and October, which is the best time to visit the Pietroasele wine estates east of town.
