Crâng Park

Crâng is Buzău's lung: a 100-hectare park on the western edge of the city merging into a larger forest of oak, ash, lime and maple — a remnant of the old Codrii Vlăsiei lowland forest that once covered much of Wallachia. The park has a small artificial lake, the Heleșteu, fed by a channel from the Buzău river, where rowing boats can be hired in summer. There are children's playgrounds, a chess corner, and a stadium tucked into the southern end.

It is an honest city park rather than a destination in itself, but it is well-kept and genuinely pleasant on a warm afternoon. The Buzău County Museum stands at its entrance and is the natural pairing for a visit. A 1976 obelisk near the lake commemorates 1,600 years since the first recorded mention of Buzău.

A story
The Crâng forest has been common land for Buzău since at least 1568, when a Wallachian prince granted it to the local bishopric. Its name — crâng means "young forest" in Romanian — suggests it was once coppiced for timber. By 1829 locals were using it as a leisure ground; by 1850 it had been formally laid out as a public park. That is a longer civic history than most of the city around it.
