Vidraru Dam

High concrete arch dam on the Transfăgărășan road, above a mountain reservoir.

Vidraru Dam is the dramatic punctuation mark on the road north from Curtea de Argeș toward the Transfăgărășan. The concrete arch holds back a long mountain reservoir, with forested slopes rising around it and the road curling away into the Făgăraș Mountains.

The dam is a quick stop, but a memorable one if you are driving the route. Walk the crest for the scale, look back toward the valley, and watch traffic carefully because the road can be busy in season. It pairs naturally with Poienari Citadel and the higher Transfăgărășan viewpoints, provided weather and road closures allow the full drive.
