Deva is a year-round town but the most rewarding time to visit is late spring through early autumn, when the Citadel Hill nature reserve is in full bloom and the surrounding countryside is green.
The folk-festival calendar is one of the best reasons to time a visit carefully. In mid-January, Deva hosts the Căluşarul Transilvan — the Transylvanian Morris Dancers Festival — a colourful winter event drawing traditional dance groups from across the region. The wider area around Deva offers more: the Târgul de Fete (Girls' Fair) on Găina Mountain in the Apuseni takes place in late July, the Kiss Fair spring festival in Hălmagiu falls in March, and the Nedeia festival at Avram Iancu happens on the second Sunday in June. Orthodox Easter and Christmas both bring traditional carols and folk dances to the streets and squares.
Summer weekends tend to fill up with domestic visitors; if you prefer quiet, early September combines good weather with noticeably thinner crowds.
