The Palatul Stern, built in 1905 to designs by Komor Marcell and Jakab Dezső, is one of the most photographed buildings in Oradea — partly for its asymmetric green-and-yellow tiled roof, partly for its location on the corner facing Strada Republicii. It belonged to the Stern family, prominent Jewish merchants in the late Habsburg period.
The detailing is pure Hungarian Secession: stylised tulips and folk motifs in the plasterwork, wrought-iron balconies, and a tower-like corner bay that catches the morning light. The ground floor was originally a department store and is once again given over to shops and a cafe.
