When to Go

Oradea has a continental climate moderated by its position in the lowlands of western Romania — hot summers, cold winters, and short transitional seasons. July and August are the most reliable months for sunshine but can push past 35°C; the cafe terraces along Strada Republicii are at their busiest then.

May, June and September are arguably the best months. The temperatures sit in the low to mid 20s, the central squares are in full flower, and the spa at Băile Felix is uncrowded. December has its own appeal — a modest but charming Christmas market fills Union Square — though the weather is grey and damp more often than crisp.

The city's main festival is the Oradea Festival of Music in late summer, which spreads classical concerts across the cathedral, the synagogue and the open courtyard of the fortress. The Toamna Orădeană (Oradean Autumn) festival in mid-September is the local harvest celebration, with food stalls and folk music around the centre.
