Elie Wiesel Memorial House

Childhood home of the Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor

Address Strada Tudor Vladimirescu 1, Sighetu Marmației

The yellow corner house where Elie Wiesel was born in 1928 and lived until the deportation of Sighet's Jewish community in May 1944 stands as a quiet memorial museum a few streets from the main square. Wiesel — Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 1986 and author of Night, one of the defining accounts of the Holocaust — returned several times before his death in 2016 and helped curate the displays. The two ground-floor rooms hold family photographs, items from the deported Jewish community of Sighet (around 14,000 people, of whom only a few hundred returned), and the original manuscripts of some of Wiesel's writing. The first-floor room is preserved as the family's living space.

A story
Wiesel was deported with his family in May 1944, at the age of 15, after the Hungarian authorities (Northern Transylvania was then under Hungarian rule) handed over the local Jewish community to the German SS. The house he describes in *Night* still stands at the corner of Strada Vladimirescu and Strada Dragoș Vodă — preserved as a memorial museum since 2002.
