Sighet's central pull is the Memorial of the Victims of Communism, housed in the former political prison and one of the most affecting museums in Eastern Europe. The other essential stop is the Elie Wiesel Memorial House, where the Nobel laureate spent his childhood before being deported to Auschwitz. Beyond the museums, Sighet is a quiet starting point for the wooden churches and traditional villages of Maramureș — the Merry Cemetery at Săpânța and the wooden churches of Bârsana, Budești, and Ieud are all within reach.
