The standout day trip from Sighet is the Merry Cemetery at Săpânța, 18 km west — a graveyard of painted blue wooden crosses where every headstone carries a comic, sometimes ribald rhymed verse about the life of the person beneath. South of Sighet, the wooden churches and Maramureș villages along the Iza Valley make a long day's drive — Bârsana, Budești, Ieud, and Poienile Izei all hold churches on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The road continues east into the Mara Valley with more wooden churches at Mara, Hoteni, and Călinești. For a longer drive, the Rodna Mountains National Park and the Pietrosul Rodnei peak (2,303 m) are within range for a long day.
