The Iza is the river that drains the heart of Maramureș, running west from Săcel and the Rodna mountains and joining the Tisza just upstream of Sighet. The Iza Valley between Sighet and Săcel is the cultural spine of the region — almost every village along it has a 17th- or 18th-century wooden church, and the rural life of haystacks, painted gates, and horse-drawn carts is still visible. Driving the valley is the classic Maramureș day. Fishing for trout is possible with a permit.
