Stelea Monastery

A small Moldavian-style monastery in the centre of Târgoviște, founded in 1645 by the Moldavian prince Vasile Lupu as a peace gesture to his Wallachian rival Matei Basarab. The church is unusually compact and combines Wallachian and Moldavian architectural elements — slender twin towers, a high apse, narrow proportions.

The monastery still functions as a religious community and the interior is decorated with restored 17th-century frescoes. Free entry; a small donation to the monks is customary.
