Day Trips

Maramureș is itself the day trip destination for most Transylvania visitors — people come up from Cluj or Baia Mare for a day or two and explore the churches and villages. If you are based here for longer and want to range further, there are a few useful excursions.

Baia Mare, the nearest city of any size, is about 90 minutes south and has a few things worth seeing: some interesting communist-era murals, a historic centre that survived the 20th century better than most Romanian cities its size, and a couple of good museums. It is also a practical base for arriving and departing.

The Izei valley villages — Rozavlea, Șieu, Botiza, Poienile Izei — string out east of Sighetu along the Iza river and each has wooden churches or gates or both. You could cover four or five of them in a single day by car. Botiza in particular has a strong tradition of village guesthouses and a church with well-preserved 18th-century paintings.

Cross-border to Solotvyno/Slatina, on the Ukrainian side, was possible before 2022 and may become so again; the border crossing at Sighetu leads directly into what was historically called Máramarossziget in Hungarian, the same region under a different sovereignty. The cultural and architectural similarities are close — wooden churches, Greek Catholic traditions, the same Carpathian landscape — making the cross-border dimension historically interesting even if access is currently limited.
