When to Go

Chita has one of the most extreme continental climates in the world. Winters are brutal: temperatures of -30°C or colder are common from December to February, with very little snow (the region is too dry for heavy snowfall) but biting wind. The Trans-Siberian Railway operates year-round, but arriving in winter requires serious preparation for any time spent outside.

Summer (June to August) is warm, often hot, with temperatures reaching 30°C or more. This is the most comfortable time to visit for outdoor sightseeing, including the climb to Titovskaya Sopka. Thunderstorms are common in July. Spring and autumn are short and unpredictable — temperatures swing dramatically.

The Zabaykalsky Krai region around Chita, with its vast grasslands and wildlife, is best in early summer (May–June) when wildflowers are in bloom and the steppe turns green.
