Trinity Monastery

16th-century Orthodox monastery on the old town bluff above the Volga

The Vvedensky Cathedral and Trinity Monastery on the old town promontory are among the oldest buildings in Cheboksary. The monastery was founded in the 16th century, shortly after the Russian conquest of the region from the Kazan Khanate, as part of the Russification and Christianisation of the Chuvash territories. The ensemble of white-painted churches and bell towers on the high bank is the most picturesque sight in the city.

The complex is still an active monastery, and the churches are open to visitors outside services. The view from the promontory — down onto the bay and across to the Volga beyond — is the best in Cheboksary and worth the short climb up from the embankment level.
