Knyaz-Vladimir Monastery

Red-brick Orthodox monastery in Irkutsk, built as a memorial to Prince Vladimir.

Knyaz-Vladimir Monastery is a red-brick Orthodox complex on the eastern side of Irkutsk, built at the end of the nineteenth century in honour of Prince Vladimir and the Christianisation of Rus. Its tall church, patterned brickwork, and enclosed grounds make it distinct from the city's wooden-house streets.

It is a calmer stop than the central churches and museums. Visit respectfully, as this is an active religious site, and look especially at the way the brick decoration gives the building a sharper, more vertical character than Irkutsk's older Siberian churches.
