Founded in 1782, the Irkutsk Regional Museum is one of the oldest museums in Siberia. Its extensive collections cover the natural history of Lake Baikal, the indigenous peoples of the region — Buryats, Evenks, and Yakuts — and the city's complex past as a place of Decembrist exile. The ethnographic halls, with their displays of traditional dress and shamanic objects, are particularly strong.
