Nikolsky Zakhab

Fortified gate passage showing how attackers were trapped inside the entrance

The Nikolsky Zakhab is the long fortified entrance passage at the fortress, designed so that anyone who broke through the outer gate still had to pass under fire before reaching the inner yard. It is the sort of detail that makes Izborsk more interesting than a simple wall-and-tower ruin.

Pause here rather than rushing through. The narrowness, turns, and overhead positions make medieval defensive architecture easy to understand without a guidebook.
