Truvor's Cross

Weathered stone cross in the old cemetery, wrapped in the founding legend of Izborsk

Truvor's Cross stands in the cemetery near Truvorovo Gorodishche, a large weathered stone cross that local tradition associates with the legendary first ruler of Izborsk. The chronology is awkward, and historians do not treat it as a literal grave marker.

Still, it is worth seeing because it shows how Izborsk sells itself to memory as much as to archaeology. The cross, the grass, and the low skyline make a strong image, especially in the evening when the fortress is no longer the only thing commanding attention.
