The Church of the Holy Family (Kirche zur Heiligen Familie) is one of the most striking surviving pieces of pre-war Königsberg — a large neo-Gothic red brick Catholic church that dominates its southern district. The exterior is remarkably well-preserved: the tall nave, large west window, and flanking towers give it real presence. It sits in what was once a middle-class Catholic neighbourhood, now mostly rebuilt with Soviet housing.
The church illustrates the peculiar religious history of the region. Königsberg was a predominantly Protestant city for centuries, but had a significant Catholic minority. The building survived the war and Soviet occupation precisely because it was repurposed as a concert hall — the authorities had no theological objection to the building as an acoustic space. Today it functions as a concert hall and place of worship simultaneously, and the concert programme is worth checking if you are in the city in summer.
