Church of St. John the Baptist

The Church of St. John the Baptist (Rozhdestvo-Bogorodicheskaya tserkov) stands at the foot of the upper town, close to the Kremlin walls, its white baroque ornament making it instantly recognisable. The church dates from the late 17th century and is attributed to the Stroganov family's architectural patronage — like the Stroganov Church further down Rozhdestvenskaya Street, it displays the elaborate carved-stone decoration that characterises the Stroganov Baroque style.

The church is small and was long closed for restoration but has returned to use as an active parish. Inside, the iconostasis and frescoes have been partially restored. The building is most impressive from outside, where the play of white carved detail against the red-painted walls is as rich as anywhere in the city.

A story
According to local tradition, the original wooden church on this site was where Kuzma Minin gave his famous speech in 1611, calling on Nizhny Novgorod to fund and join the Second Volunteer Army to drive out the Polish-Lithuanian occupation of Moscow. The current stone church was built between 1683 and 1704 by the Stroganov family in the same elaborate baroque style as their nearby Nativity Church.
