Samara's main draws are its wartime history — the underground bunker and the city's role as the Soviet reserve capital — and its long Volga embankment, one of the pleasantest stretches of riverfront in Russia. The old city centre has enough Art Nouveau and wooden merchant architecture to occupy a day's wandering.
