When to Go

Samara has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. July and August are the peak summer months, with temperatures regularly reaching 30°C and Volga beach life in full swing. This is when the embankment is most alive, boat trips to the Zhiguli Mountains run most frequently, and the city is at its most enjoyable.

Winter is cold — January averages around -12°C — but the city functions normally and the frozen Volga is a spectacle in itself. May and September are pleasant transition months with less crowding and reasonable prices.

Avoid visiting in late November through February unless you are prepared for serious Russian winter.
