Afanasy Nikitin Monument

Volga embankment monument to the Tver merchant who travelled to India

The Afanasy Nikitin Monument stands on the left bank of the Volga, where the river gives Tver some of its best views. Nikitin was a Tver merchant whose long 15th-century journey to India became one of medieval Russia's most remarkable travel accounts.

The monument itself is straightforward, but the location is excellent. Come here as part of an embankment walk, especially near sunset when the bridges and river terminal catch the light.

A story
Afanasy Nikitin left Tver in the 1460s and travelled through Persia to India, recording the journey in A Journey Beyond the Three Seas. That makes him one of the first Europeans to leave a written account of India, decades before Portuguese sea routes made such travel more regular.
