Imperial Travel Palace

Catherine-era palace built for imperial journeys between Moscow and St Petersburg

The Imperial Travel Palace is Tver's best building, a pale classical complex facing the river and the City Garden. It was designed for the imperial family to rest on the journey between Moscow and St Petersburg, and it still has the scale and composure of an official stop between capitals.

Today it houses the Tver Regional Art Gallery. The collection is worth seeing, but the building is the headline: restored halls, balanced facades, and a setting that explains why Tver once mattered on the imperial map.

A story
The palace was built in the 1760s as part of the imperial road system between Russia's two capitals. Its purpose was practical as much as ceremonial: the court needed dignified places to sleep, change horses, hold audiences, and remind provincial towns who ruled the road.
