Ethnographic Museum of the Peoples of Transbaikalia

The Ethnographic Museum is one of the largest open-air museums in Russia: about 40 hectares of pine forest on the edge of the city, dotted with reconstructed buildings from each of Transbaikalia's communities — Evenki nomadic camps, Buryat yurt clusters, Cossack farmsteads, Old Believers' villages, and a Soviet-era town square.

Allow at least half a day. Wear sturdy shoes — paths are forest tracks — and bring water in summer or warm layers in winter. A small zoo at the far end of the site has Siberian wildlife. The site reaches by trolleybus or bus from the city centre.

A story
The museum's relocated wooden Old Believers' house was dismantled log by log in a remote Buryatian village and rebuilt on site — paint, painted ceilings, and stove all intact — making it one of the finest preserved examples of Siberian peasant interior decoration anywhere.
